WTF History: Resurrection Men

Because apparently, even death required anti-theft packaging.

WTF History

Nothing says science like a shovel

Resurrection Men

A weekly dose of macabre history, gently pressed into your hands like a haunted educational pamphlet.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, anatomy schools had a tiny little problem:

They needed bodies.

Unfortunately, the legal supply of cadavers was about as generous as a Victorian father’s emotional vocabulary.

So, naturally, a black-market industry crawled out of the graveyard.

They were called “resurrection men” — which sounds poetic until you realize it meant men with shovels, lanterns, and absolutely no respect for your eternal rest. They dug up the recently dead and sold the bodies to surgeons and anatomy schools for dissection. Bills to pay... mouths to feed... morals to... bleed? Anyway...

Science marched forward.

The corpses were simply… drafted.

Families, understandably, were not charmed. Some hired cemetery watchmen. Others used heavy stones, locked vaults, or iron cages called mortsafes to keep their dearly departed from becoming extra credit. (Don’t worry... we will cover those in another post.)

Because apparently, even death required anti-theft packaging.

Seance scent pairing

This one belongs to the Embalming Oils — silky, scented oils for the living body, because unlike Victorian anatomy schools, we prefer our corporeal interests consensual.

Unlike the resurrection men, we do not recommend disturbing the dead.
We recommend moisturizing the alive.
