Before Photoshop, there was spirit photography: the deeply Victorian hobby of paying someone to take your portrait and maybe slip a dead relative into the background like a grief goblin with studio lighting.
One of the most famous spirit photographers was William H. Mumler, who became known in the 1860s for photographs that appeared to show ghostly figures beside living sitters.
Were they real ghosts? Historically speaking: no evidence. Photographic tricks? Much more likely. Emotional damage with a receipt? Absolutely.
Because nothing says “healthy mourning process” like paying a man to make Grandma hover behind you in sepia.
