WTF History: You're Invited

WTF History

This week’s historical dumpster fire

You’re Invited

A weekly dose of macabre history, gently pressed into your hands like a haunted educational pamphlet.

You are cordially invited to a funeral.

Before death announcements were reduced to a group text and several people replying, “Wait, what happened?” funerals came with proper stationery.

Funeral invitations appeared centuries ago and were delivered to inform friends, relatives, and important social acquaintances that someone had died—and that their presence was expected.

Some early invitations even acted as admission tickets, particularly for crowded or high-profile funerals.

Because apparently you could be turned away at the church door for failing to bring proof that you were officially invited to grieve.

By the nineteenth century, funeral and memorial cards were commonly printed with thick black borders, ornate lettering, cemetery scenes, urns, angels, and the deceased’s important dates. They could be mailed as announcements, handed out at the funeral, or saved afterward as keepsakes.

Nothing communicated sincere devastation quite like excellent typography.

The Victorians understood that death was not merely a personal tragedy. It was a formal social engagement requiring the correct clothing, the correct stationery… and the possibility of being denied entry to a funeral because you were not on the list.

Humanity has always been strange.

We simply stopped having it engraved.

Thank you for being here.

Please note: none of this was written by robots aka AI. All of our copy, and creatives are made and will always be made by free-range, grass-fed human nonsense.
